5 Out-of-this-World Space Science Fiction Podcasts
Four podcasters come together to share the 5 space sci-fi podcasts they adore whose writing, acting and sound design shine brighter than any star in the night’s sky.
We Fix Space Junk
This tightly scripted, fast-paced, and extremely well-produced podcast follows the adventures of the crew of The Yellow Submarine which consists of a repairman, a former-socialite and the ship’s cheeky A.I. (who seems somewhat reminiscent of Holly from Red Dwarf). The crew runs odd jobs for a shadowy and predatory loan corporation known as Automnicon – who, quite literally, owns them all.
Speaking of Automnicon, there’s a deep well of hilarious, fantastic and terrifying stories to discover with this dark company that is pulling the strings – especially noteworthy are the Automnicon job listings, survival rules, and pretty much every other thing you get to hear the voice say – and make sure to stay right to the end for a delightful bit every episode!
Beth Crane and Hedley Knights have created a mesmerizing and fun world that feels very lived in for the characters – there are subtle bits of plot and other information in every episode that will pique your interest and you’ll find yourself drawn deeper into We Fix Space Junk.
Vega: A Sci-Fi Adventure Podcast!
This podcast is a little different from the others on this list in that it is created, written, produced and performed by just one person: Ivuoma Okoro. Imagine you had an incredibly creative friend with a magnetic storytelling style who told you about the adventures of badass Vega Rex, a space assassin who is the best in the biz. You don’t have to imagine that hard, because that’s what you get with Vega.
Vega brings you into the world and dynamics of the story in delicious little bites. Prepare yourself for an action-packed ride as Ivuoma brings each episode alive with great sound design and incredible detail.
Ivuoma’s voice and storytelling are just a pleasure to listen to. She’s conversational, funny and dishes out twists and turns with aplomb. I can’t imagine listening to Vega: A Sci-Fi Adventure Podcast! and not immediately wanting to be friends with her.
Facing Fate
Okay, we have to come clean. We each work on this podcast, but it’s still one of our favourites! When you think of actual play podcasts, you often think of sword & sorcery, wizards and elves. But, when you take the time to step outside the known and into a new world, you get Facing Fate.
Facing Fate, Season 1, brings you the story of “Luna Corp”. A moon base corporation with the sole purpose of mining moon dust as a form of energy. But, when an outbreak aboard the main base occurs, decisions of the corporation put everyone on the moon, and the world, in danger.
Recording season 1 actually gave many of us nightmares. Our fans have told us that the performances, sound design and editing made them forget they were listening to an actual play podcast.
This is one of our shows at Dumb Dragons Productions. If you like horror, sci-fi, and mystery, then come aboard Luna Corp main base.
Civilized
This improvised Sci-Fi audio fiction podcast immerses you into a whole new world as a lone terraforming ship gets separated from it’s fleet and the crew on board find themselves on an alien planet. These new inhabitants have to learn to survive in this unpredictable environment and the audience is taken on an adventure as new and life-threatening situations pop up.
Eli McIlveen’s sound design creates such a deep and almost hypnotic world that surrounds you. The comedy is dark and the characters are memorable and hilarious. You feel like you are trudging along behind them as you are swallowed up by a remote and unforgiving habitat.
If you like your comedies dark, characters fantastic, and your surroundings alien, then Civilized is for you.
Seren
This 8-part series is a tale of its main character Seren, who is sent away from her home, Lux, on a mission to terraform a new planet. Sounds like a thrilling adventure, doesn’t it?
Through the telling of Seren’s tale we learn of certain political agendas and societal breakdowns that weave a different tale for these citizens of Lux.
The writing, production and performance by showrunner Nerys Howell is exemplary, bringing you along on Seren’s lonesome, and increasingly tragic journey through the stars. Join Seren wherever you download podcasts.
