We’ve discussed movie review podcasts in the past, but nothing quite like the Bad Feminist Film Club. The BFFC (what the cool kids call it) is hosted by two friends who one day decided to record the conversations they were already having. Inspired by Roxane Gay’s, Bad Feminist, they wanted to discuss the movies they’re passionate about and sprinkle in some feminist virtues along the way.

To provide a clear example of how the Bad Feminist Film Club isn’t like your typical movie podcasts, they decided to start with a deep dive breakdown of the Fast & Furious franchise — a franchise that holds a special place in my heart. Instead of solely focusing on high-brow indie arthouse films, the BFFC discusses the movies everyone watches, from the latest Star Wars movie to Captain America to The Kingsman.

I had the chance to talk to BFFC hosts Kelly and Sarah about their podcast, why they chose to start with Fast & Furious, and if they have any Oscar predictions. See below for our Q&A.

Discover Pods: How’d you get into podcasting?

Kelly: It all started when Sarah texted me about starting a podcast where we talk about feminism and the Fast and Furious franchise. We already talk about these subjects on a regular basis, and figured it would be an easy step to record them.

DP: As a lifetime fan of the Fast and Furious series, is there a particular reason you decided to start your podcast with that franchise?

Kelly: The Fast and Furious franchise is one of the most ridiculous and entertaining movie series. We though that it would be a great starting off point for podcast since they had seven movies at the time! Also, who else is talking about feminism and the Fast and the Furious? Also, a big theme of our podcast is the idea that you can love something but still criticize it. Fast & Furious is ridiculous, really fun, and surprisingly diverse, but it still has plenty of narrative issues and sexist themes. Since it also happens to be a franchise we both adore, it seemed like a good place to start.

DP: Any BFFC Oscar predictions?

Kelly: Overall, we were pretty impressed with the Oscar nominations, so there would be a lot of outcomes we’d be happy with. As predictions go, we could see Shape of Water picking up a lot of the technical awards this year, but could see The Post winning Best Picture. Also given the news that The Phantom Thread was Daniel-Day Lewis’s last movie, we see the Academy giving Lead Actor to him. For lead actress, it’s going to be tough to beat Meryl Streep.

DP: What are your underrated movies from the year? Overrated movies?

Kelly: One of the most underrated movies from the year is Mudbound. We felt like it got a little buried on Netflix and really could have gotten a nomination for Best Picture.

As for overrated movies, Kelly saw Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and she really didn’t understand how it was nominated for Best Picture, especially given the strength of other films that came out in 2017.

DP: What’s the biggest challenge you face as an indie podcast?

Kelly: The biggest challenge we’ve had is building our fan base. There are so many great podcasts out there that we trying to find our audience was a struggle in the first couple months. Also, it can be a challenge having to produce and promote your own podcast while maintaining a full-time job. Plus, we live on opposite coasts, so scheduling can be a real issue without the management and technology available to larger podcasts.
