Podcast Spotlights

Podcast Spotlight: Escrow Out Loud

It’s been said several times, but it honestly can’t be said enough: the democratic nature of podcasts opens the door for literally anyone to create a podcast where they might not have had an outlet before. No matter how niche, how specific, or how random, any motivated person can create a truly compelling podcast. This mentality — where a creator isn’t trying to cater to the masses — provides a great incubator for expressive freedom.

One such niche podcast we were turned onto is Escrow Out Loud. The premise is delightfully simple: an inside look and remarkable stories from one of the hottest real estate markets. San Francisco-based real estate agents, Britton Jackson and Matt Fuller, chronicle some of the more outlandish things they’ve encountered while showing houses and leading prospective buyers through the purchase process. Whether you’re another real estate agent, a homeowner, or just someone who likes to get a glimpse into something new, Escrow Out Loud is worth a listen.

We were lucky to catch up with Matt Fuller and discuss the podcast, the balancing act of real estate and podcasting, and what else he’s listening to now. See below for our Q&A.

Discover Pods: How’d you get into podcasting?

FULLER: Years ago, I first got into blogging and podcasting when I was becoming a parent. Then I became a parent and didn’t have time for blogging or podcasting anymore, but love that I’ve been able to incorporate both into my business.

DP: In your own words, why should listeners tune in to Escrow Out Loud?

FULLER: SF is a city filled with interesting people and interesting homes. That makes for some great stories, and you might just learn something about San Francisco,  real estate, SF real estate or how Realtors approach their job along the way.

DP: Can you tease out a truly outrageous home buying experience detailed in a podcast?

FULLER: Dog poop, open gas valves, and absent agents: Episode #1, Begin at the Beginning, is the story of Britton’s first sale. It’s pretty over the top! Episode 10, Is Anyone Home, talks about some weird open home experiences and Episode 11, Sketchy Showings, talks about some of the stranger private home showings we’ve had.

DP: Besides the prices, what is something non-Bay Area folks don’t know about the housing market?

FULLER: That the bay area is a huge area with a lot of unique micro-markets that don’t always behave the same. Be careful when listening or reading to real estate statistics, and make sure you understand the what and the where of the stats, as well as what kind of valid comparisons or conclusions you can make.

DP: What’s the biggest challenge you face as an indie podcaster?

FULLER: Building and finding an audience.

DP: Where do you want to take your podcast?

FULLER: To a tropical island with great sunsets and awesome surfing. Or, a bigger audience to help share, education, and entertain with stories based on real-life experiences.

DP: What other podcasts are you listening to now?

FULLER: It’s an eclectic list. The podcast I’ve listened to the longest is probably Tiesto’s Club Life, which just hit its 600th episode – I love the music and respect his longevity! Achieve Your Goals with Hal Elrod, Bay Curious from KQED, Finding Mastery: Conversations with Michael Gervais, and Listing Bits with Greg Robertson, and a California Association of Realtors members podcast are in heavy rotation these days.

DP: Anything else you’d like to add?

FULLER: Thanks for listening!
