The History of Podcasts
Last updated on July 26th, 2017
In about ten years, the percent of the US population who have listened to a podcast rose from 11% to 40%. This rapid growth, followed by the mainstream adoption of podcasts made me want to reflect back on how it all started — the history of podcasts. What unlikely string of events caused podcasts to spike in popularity and stream worldwide to become the audio service we all love today?
How did podcasts leverage RSS feeds to package audio snippets? Who was the first to coin the term “podcast”? What was the first popular podcast channel? How did Apple play a role in the rise of podcasts?
Some of the history of podcasts I already knew, however, most was new to me.
